Safeway Canada - Never any staff
As a former employee of a Safeway bakery I know first hand how the employee hours work. It was bad enough for employee staffing when owned by Safeway Canada, now that sobeys has taken over the stores the lack of employees on staff at any given time has gone from bad to terrible. It doesn't matter what Safeway store I am shopping in, it's the same at every one of them, one to two checkouts open, six to eight closed, shelves missing stock and disorderly. Sobeys head office needs to stop running their stores by accountants, get out and be a customer in your local Safeway and see for yourself how the slim picking of employee hours has brought your stores down to an aggravating shopping expierience for your customers. Better yet walk into a save on foods and see how it's done right.
This nonsense of cutting hours on a daily basis is ridiculous, common practice to send employees home an hour early to save a buck? Let's get real here, it's not 20 years ago when employees made a living wage from working at these stores, all new hires since 1997 start at minimum wage. They don't see a raise until they've worked so many hours which takes almost a full year and then you get a whopping 5 cents to 35 cents depending on when your hours line up to your years of service.
I slaved for three years in this *** hole of a company, arms are forever scarred from burns due to bakery racks that were broken, oven doors that close on you due to lack of maintanence and numerous other issues, all to exceed my yearly hours allotment and not receive the yearly wage increase. By the time I moved and therefore quit this job I had been rewarded with $1.80 over minimum wage.
So for a savings of $12.00/hour sobeys would rather send their employees home and *** off the customers, seems like a practice that will run this company into the ground. Good on you for letting paper pushers and numbers pushers run the show, guess what? It ain't working!
